An Early Resurrection Tradition
3For I handed
on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that
Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 4and
that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in
accordance with the scriptures, 5and
that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.

6Then
he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one
time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 7Then
he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8Last
of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. (1
Corinthians 15:3-8)

A Resurrection Tradition (without appearances)
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of
James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint
him. 2And very
early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they
went to the tomb. 3They
had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for
us from the entrance to the tomb?’ 4When
they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had
already been rolled back. 5As
they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white
robe, sitting on the right side; and they were
|
|
alarmed. 6But
he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of
Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here.
Look, there is the place they laid him. 7But
go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to
Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.’ 8So
they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had
seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Jesus with Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus
13Now
on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus,
about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14and
talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While
they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went
with them, 16but
their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And
he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while
you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad. 18Then
one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the
only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have
taken place there in these days?’ 19He
asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about
Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before
God and all the people, 20and
how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to
death and crucified him. 21But
we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides
all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22Moreover,
some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early
this morning, 23and
when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels

who said that he was alive. 24Some
of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the
women had said; but they did not see him.’ 25Then
he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart
to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26Was
it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and
then enter into his glory?’ 27Then
beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them
the things about himself in all the scriptures. 28As
they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead
as if he were going on. 29But
they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is
almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to
stay with them. 30When
he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it,
and gave it to them. 31Then
their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished
from their sight. 32They
said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while
he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the
scriptures to us?’ 33That
same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the
eleven and their companions gathered together. 34They
were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to
Simon!’ 35Then
they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made
known to them in the breaking of the bread. (Luke 24:13-35)

Sharing in the Resurrection of Jesus
8. . . For his sake
I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as
rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and
be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes
from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the
righteousness from God based on faith. 10I
want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the
sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, 11if
somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. (Philippians
3:8-11)

Sharing in the Resurrection of Jesus
1What then are we to say? Should
we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2By
no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3Do
you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus
were baptized into his death? 4Therefore
we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as
Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we
too might walk in newness of life. 5For
if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will
certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. (Romans
6:1-5)
